๐Ÿš— Vehicles

Project Zomboid has dozens of different vehicles. Each vehicle has its own set of parts, load capacity, fuel consumption and performance.

๐Ÿ’ก
First Vehicle: Prioritize cars with good load capacity (Pickup Trucks, SUVs, Vans). At first, don't get too attached to the vehicle โ€” it will break down. Always carry a Jerry Can with extra fuel.

Why Vehicles Are Essential

๐Ÿ›’ Cargo Transport

Load hundreds of items in seconds. Without a vehicle, withdrawals from supermarkets are slow and risky.

๐Ÿš€ Mobility

Reach any part of the map quickly. Explore remote areas, escape hordes, connect colonies.

โš” Mass Weapon

Running over zombies is very effective. With strong engine and good speed, clean entire streets.

๐Ÿ  Temporary Base

Vehicles serve as temporary shelter. Sleep in the back seat in an emergency.

Vehicle Parts

Every vehicle has parts with individual condition (0โ€“100%). When critical parts become too damaged, the vehicle stops working.

PartFunctionFault ImpactRepair
Engine Generates power for locomotion Car won't start or drastically loses performance Engine Parts + Mechanics 3+
Battery Powers electric starter and lights Car won't start in the morning New battery or Car Battery Charger
Tires Traction and stability Flat tire = much slower, unstable Lug Wrench + Jack + Spare Tire
Brakes Braking Bad brakes = stopping takes a long time (dangerous at high speeds) Brake Parts + Mechanics 2+
Suspension Impact absorption Bad suspension = damage to parts when going over obstacles Suspension Parts + Mechanics 3+
Muffler (Silent) Reduces engine noise No muffler = very noisy engine, attracts zombies Muffler Part + Mechanics 1
Windshield Driver protection No glass = driver exposed to weather and zombies Windshield Glass + Mechanics 2
Gas Tank Stores fuel Leaky tank = constant fuel leak Repair Kit + Mechanics 4
Door Side protection Destroyed door = character exposed to the side Door Component + Mechanics 1
Seat Passenger capacity Destroyed bench = impossible to sit in that position Seat Component + Mechanics 1
๐Ÿ’ก
Inspect Vehicle: Press V near a vehicle to open the menu. In "Inspect" you see the status of all parts. Carry a Multimeter to check the battery level accurately.

๐Ÿ”ง Vehicle Maintenance

Vehicles wear out with use. Regular maintenance is essential to avoid unexpected breakdowns in dangerous situations.

Essential Mechanics Tools

ToolUsage
Wrench / Socket WrenchRemove and install engine and body parts
Lug WrenchRemove and Install Tires
JackLift vehicle to work on tires and chassis
ScrewdriverElectrical work, battery
MultimeterCheck exact battery level
Car Battery ChargerRecharge battery (requires Electrical 5)
Blowtorch + MaskWelding body parts (Metalworking)

Recommended Maintenance Routine

  1. Inspect Daily: Open the vehicle menu (V) and check the condition of critical parts โ€” engine, battery, tires, brakes.
  2. Battery: Use Multimeter to check level. Below 20% = risk of not turning on. Keep Car Battery Charger in the base.
  3. Tires: Monitor condition. Below 30% = risk of puncture. Always carry 1โ€“2 spare tires.
  4. Fuel: Never leave without checking the level. Always carry an extra Jerry Can.
  5. Engine: Below 50% condition it starts to lose power. Please repair before using for long exploration.
  6. Brakes and Suspension: Weekly check. Bad brakes = fatal emergencies.

Spare Parts Checklist

โ›ฝ Fuel

Fuel is a finite resource in the world of PZ. Gas stations run out of stock over time. Plan your fuel logistics.

Types of Fuel

FuelVehiclesSourcesStorage
Gasoline (Regular) Most civilian cars Gas stations and gallons looted Jerry Can (10โ€“20L)

Fuel Strategy

๐Ÿ—“ Short Term (Days 1โ€“14)

Gas stations still have stock. Direct supply at the pump. Always carry a full Jerry Can.

๐Ÿ“… Medium Term (Week 2โ€“4)

Stations close to the base are becoming empty. Explore new positions in more remote areas. Map reservations.

๐Ÿ—บ Long Term (Month 2+)

Prioritize remote stations and set up a fuel reserve at the base with several full gallons.

โ™ป Very Long Term

On long-running servers, consider reducing vehicle usage. Animals for transportation, hiking trails to nearby areas.

๐Ÿ’ก
How to Fuel: With Jerry Can full in your backpack, right click on the vehicle โ†’ "Add Fuel". Or right click on the pump at the station โ†’ "Refuel from pump" (while there is still fuel at the station).

๐Ÿ  Vehicle as Mobile Base

Advanced strategy โ€” use a large vehicle as a temporary base during long exploration.

Configuration of Van/Truck as Mobile Base

  • Ideal Van Chevalier Step Van or Delivery Van โ€” internal space, good load.
  • Essential Items Sleeping Bag, First Aid Kit, mechanics tools, extra fuel.
  • Food Crackers, canned food, water โ€” no refrigeration required.
  • Security Close doors and sleep inside the vehicle. Zombies don't easily break vehicle windows.
  • Communication Portable radio for checking stations and multiplayer.

๐Ÿ’ก Driving Tips

  • Muffler Always repair the muffler. Noisy engine attracts dozens of zombies as it passes through streets.
  • Speed Moderate speed in urban areas. High speed = accidents and damage to the vehicle.
  • Zombies on the Road Running over at high speed causes damage to the vehicle. Prefer to divert when possible.
  • Headlights Turn off night headlights in areas you do not want to alert. Lights attract zombies.
  • Escape Route Before leaving the vehicle in a dangerous area, position the car to exit quickly (facing the street, door open).
  • Alarm If the car has an alarm and it goes off, that's a disaster โ€” it warns entire hordes. Keep an eye out for broken windows.
  • Off-Road SUVs and Pickups have better performance in the field. Sports cars get bogged down on uneven terrain.
  • Hotwire Without key, can be started with hotwire โ€” requires Mechanics 2 + Electrical 1. Increases chance of damaging the battery.
