โš™ Advanced Mechanics

This section covers systems beyond basic survival โ€” generators, radio, advanced settings, and guides for experienced players.

โšก Generators โ€” Complete Guide

Public electricity fails after a few days. To run refrigerators, freezers and lighting, you need a generator.

โ˜
NEVER use a generator in a closed space! Generators emit COโ‚‚ (carbon monoxide). In enclosed areas, accumulation causes unconsciousness and death. Always place generators outside or in open areas with good ventilation.

How to Use the Generator

  1. Find a generator: Hardware Stores, construction sites. You can find it on the street in some places.
  2. Transportation: Heavy โ€” use vehicle. Place it in the bed of the truck.
  3. Position outside of the base, preferably covered but ventilated.
  4. Connect to Electrical Panel: Use Screwdriver on the fuse box (Electrical Panel) inside the house. Requires Electrical 1.
  5. Fill up with fuel: Use Jerry Can filled with gasoline on the generator. Right click โ†’ "Add Gas".
  6. Turn it on: Right click on the generator โ†’ "Start Generator".
  7. Monitor fuel: Check regularly. Generator off = fridge off = food spoils.

Fuel Consumption

Generator SizeApprox. ConsumptionAutonomy with 10L
Small (domestic)1L for 4โ€“6h40โ€“60 hours
Medium (semi-industrial)1L for 2โ€“3h20โ€“30 hours
Large (industrial)1L for 1โ€“2h10โ€“20 hours

Fuel Management Strategy

โฐ Minimum Use

Do not leave the generator running 24 hours. Only turn on for daytime refrigeration. Turn off at night if you don't need light. Save fuel.

โ›ฝ Stock

Always keep 50โ€“100 liters reserved for the generator. Do not use up your entire reservation on vehicles. Balance between mobility and refrigerator.

๐Ÿ”‹ Backup

Always have a full Jerry Can next to the generator. If you run out of fuel at night, your food will immediately start to spoil.

๐Ÿ“ป Timer

With Advanced Electrical, install timer on generator. Automatically turns on at scheduled times โ€” saves a lot of fuel.

Appliances that Consume Energy

DevicePriorityRecommended Use
FreezerCriticalAlways on during food production
RefrigeratorCriticalAlways on for fresh food
Electric StoveHighCooking. Use a gas stove if available to save money.
LightingMediumUse candles or flashlights to reduce consumption.
TV / RadioLowFor information and reduce stress. Luxury.
Washing MachineLowHygiene. Use only when generator has fuel left.
Car Battery ChargerMediumTo keep vehicle batteries charged.

๐Ÿ“ป Radio System

The radio system in PZ is functional โ€” you can receive government broadcasts, listen to music, and communicate with other survivors.

Types of Radio

TypeRangeBatteryMain Use
Walkie Talkie Short (1โ€“2km) Small AA batteries Small group communication
Portable Radio Medium Internal chargeable battery Receive broadcasts, music, stress
Car Radio Medium Car battery Receive broadcasts while traveling
Ham Radio (Amateur) Long (100km+) Electricity / Generator Long-range communication, rare transmissions

Frequencies and Transmissions

In the game, there are broadcasts scheduled on specific frequencies. Government and military broadcasts provide information about the state of the apocalypse โ€” and change as time passes.

๐Ÿ’ก
Important Frequencies (default):
  • 100.0 MHz โ€” Government emergency broadcaster (prime directive broadcast)
  • 95.6 MHz โ€” Music station (reduces stress)
  • Multiplayer server frequencies vary โ€” ask the server admin

Build Ham Radio

  1. Electrical Range level 6.
  2. Vest: Electronic Scrap (8+), Electrical Wire (5+), Ham Radio Microphone, Antenna.
  3. Craft the Ham Radio in the crafting menu.
  4. Install in a fixed location with access to electricity from the generator.
  5. Set the frequency and start transmitting/receiving.

๐Ÿ“š Books, Magazines and XP

Reading books is the most efficient way to gain XP on specific skills. Fundamental to progress quickly.

How It Works

  • Skill Books Each skill has a series of books (Level 1โ€“5). Reading the appropriate book applies a temporary XP multiplier.
  • Multiplier With the right book: XP from 2ร— to 4ร— faster. Without the book, XP is at the base (slow) rate.
  • Practice You still need to practice the skill. The book only increases the rate of XP gained during practice.
  • Magazines Magazines teach specific recipes. Ex: "Home & Living" teaches jarring recipes.
  • Specialty Craft Skills like Knapping, Carving, Spear Crafting, Knitting, Pottery, Glassmaking, and Survivalist depend more on practice and recipe unlocks than on classic book series.

Skill Books โ€” Where to Find

SkillBook SeriesWhere to Find
CarpentryThe Carpentry Series (1โ€“5)Libraries, bookstores, homes
CookingThe Cookbook (1โ€“5)Kitchens, supermarkets, bookstores
FarmingThe Farming Manual (1โ€“5)Hardware, Garden Centers
First AidThe First Aid Manual (1โ€“5)Pharmacies, hospitals, homes
MechanicsThe Mechanics Manual (1โ€“5)Gas stations, hardware
ElectricalThe Electronics Guide (1โ€“5)Electronics, bookstores
MetalworkingThe Metalworking Guide (1โ€“5)Bedrooms, hardware
TailoringSewing & Fashion (1โ€“5)Fabric stores, homes
ForagingWilderness Survival (1โ€“5)Libraries, camping stores
AimingGun Manuals (1โ€“5)Gun Stores, police stations
KnappingNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression by practice in the crafting menu
CarvingNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression by practice with woodworking recipes
Spear CraftingNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression by crafting spears and reinforcements
KnittingNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression by crafting woolen garments
PotteryNo standard series 1โ€“5Clay molding/firing progression
GlassmakingNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression by melting and glass shaping
SurvivalistNo standard series 1โ€“5Progression through field survival utilities

Reading Strategy

  • Priority 1 Read skill books that you will use immediately. Carpentry and First Aid are essential early.
  • Read vs. Do Read the current level book BEFORE practicing. Don't waste XP practicing without the multiplier.
  • Stress Reducer Reading any book or magazine reduces unhappiness. An extra reason to always have something to read.
  • Fast Reader The Fast Reader trait reads books in half the time. Combined with Fast Learner, it's devastatingly efficient.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Multiplayer

Project Zomboid has robust multiplayer โ€” public and private servers, co-op and PvP.

Server Types

TypeDescriptionIdeal for
Cooperative PvEAll players cooperate. PvP disabled.Friends playing together
PvPPlayers can kill each otherHardcore experience
RP ServerRoleplay with own rulesNarrative immersion
Public ServantOpen to anyoneFind new friends
LAN serverLocal network โ€” no lagPlay with friends in the same location

Multiplayer Tips

  • Division of Tasks Each player focuses on one skill. One specialist in Carpentry, one in Farming, one in Mechanics โ€” much more efficient than everyone doing everything.
  • Communication Use Walkie Talkies for field communication. Agree on sound signals (shot = danger, 2 shots = safe) before leaving.
  • Shared Base A large base is easier to defend with multiple players. Split guard shifts.
  • Group Combat In formation, one player attracts the zombies and the others attack from the sides. Much safer than everyone at the same point.
  • Real PvP On PvP servers, never trust strangers. Keep the location of the base secret.

How to Host a Local Server

  1. In the main menu, go to Host.
  2. Configure server options (difficulty, mods, password).
  3. Click Start Server.
  4. Other players on the same network can find your server under LAN Servers in the multiplayer list.
  5. For internet access, configure port forwarding on your route (default port 16261 UDP/TCP).

๐Ÿ› Legacy System

When your character dies, you can create a new one on an existing server/save. Enjoy the previous character work!

How to Prepare for Inheritance

  • Hidden Cache Before any risky mission, leave a set of basic equipment in a secret location marked on the map. When he dies, go directly to him.
  • Documented Base Write down (in real life or in game chat) the location of the base, combinations of safes and stocks for the next character.
  • Passive Defense Surround the base with traps. Even with a dead character, the base will last longer.
  • Multiplayer In co-op, living allies protect the base while you create a new character.

What Happens When Your Character Dies

What staysWhat gets lost
  • Base built and improvements
  • All items deposited in crates/shelves
  • Plantations in progress
  • Domestic animals
  • Parked vehicles
  • Alarms and electrical improvements
  • All items in the character's inventory
  • All skills (accumulated XP)
  • Traits and profession
  • Clothes and equipped equipment
